What are positional head deformities and how do they occur?
What are positional head deformities and how do they occur?
Positional head deformities occur in up to 45 percent of all newborns in the first months of life because they are usually lying on their backs, as recommended by doctors, and still have a very soft skull. This can lead to a flat head, a so-called brachycephaly. But it can also happen that the little ones develop a favourite side. As a result, the head always falls in one direction and a plagiocephaly, a crooked skull, develops.
There is a particularly high risk of deformities in multiple or twin births already in the womb. These also occur more frequently with forceps births. Our Medibino has a preventive effect in particular, but can also be used for existing slight head deformities in consultation with the attending doctor or physiotherapist.
What can I do to prevent positional head deformities?
What can I do to prevent positional head deformities?
The following measures help to relieve pressure on the head and promote mobility in order to prevent head deformities.
  • Change sides regularly when feeding (this is automatic when breastfeeding).
  • Motivate your baby to regularly change head position while lying down by repositioning the bed, light sources and/or mobiles.
  • Carry your baby a lot in a sling, carrier or in your arms.
  • When your baby is awake and under observation, you can put him or her on his or her stomach if he or she likes and be active with him or her on the floor. This relieves the pressure on the head and trains the baby's mobility.
  • The Medibino can basically be used to support and relieve the back of the head during the phases of prolonged supine lying.
What age is the Medibino baby head guard suitable for?
What age is the Medibino baby head guard suitable for?
We recommend that you use the Medibino baby head protection directly after birth, i.e. from the first day of life, in order to optimally prevent deformation of the sensitive baby head. Perhaps you already know our baby head protection from your hospital - in some hospitals Medibino is used in the infant wards and supports natural, stress-free head growth from day one.
How long you should use the Medibino depends, among other things, on your baby's development and mobility. When your child starts to turn regularly on its own and become mobile, the risk of developing cranial asymmetry decreases, as the head is no longer exposed to constant, one-sided pressure from the recommended supine position, so that you can reduce the use of the Medibino baby head protection individually. However, you can continue to use it especially for longer sleep phases in the supine position.
My child puts its head sideways in the Medibino. Does this affect the protective effect?
My child puts its head sideways in the Medibino. Does this affect the protective effect? How often or how long can Medibino be used?
No. It is quite normal and not at all bad but even desirable that the children move freely in the Medibino. The ring shape ensures pressure relief even in the lateral position. Here you can find our doctor's explanation of how to use it.
There is no restriction on how often and for how long your child should lie on the Medibino baby head guard. We recommend using Medibino whenever your baby is lying on its back.
My child moves and slips out of the Medibino. What can I do?
My child moves and slips out of the Medibino. What can I do?
Of course, with increasing mobility, it happens more often that babies move and no longer lie in one place, which is a completely natural developmental process. At this point, the risk of developing a new head deformity also decreases and you can gradually reduce the use of the Medibino baby head guard. You can continue to use the Medibino especially for longer sleep phases in the supine position. If your child slips out of the ring, you can simply slide it back under the head.
Can Medibino also be used with an already existing head deformity?
Can Medibino also be used with an already existing head deformity?
Especially in the first few months of life, our Medibino baby head protection can supportively
can help to reduce an already existing slight deformation of the baby's sensitive head or reduce the risk of it getting worse.
However, neither the Medibino nor our recommendation replace a professional medical diagnosis and a possibly necessary therapy. Please talk to your doctor or midwife if you can recognise a head deformity in your baby. Several factors often play a role in the development of an existing head deformity, which should be taken into account when determining the therapy. In addition to consistent pressure-relieving positioning, it is particularly important to promote mobility.
Am I allowed to put my baby on a pillow at all?
Am I allowed to put my baby on a pillow at all?
The Medibino baby head guard is deliberately designed as a ring and not as a pillow. The recommendations for safe baby sleep advise against large-volume pillows in the baby's cot, as these can lead to overheating or rebreathing. Due to the recommendation of the supine position for safe baby sleep, the prevalence of positional head deformities in infants has now increased greatly. For this reason, the German Society for Surgery and the German Society for Paediatric Surgery recommend that infants be placed on a positioning pillow that allows the rear part to float freely in the air. The Medibino fulfils both criteria.
What are the dimensions of the Medibino baby head guard?
What are the dimensions of the Medibino baby head guard? Can the Medibino be washed? How is the baby head protection cleaned?
The ring-shaped baby head guard has a diameter of approx.
12 cm at the smallest setting and 15 cm at the largest setting. The Medibino is deliberately designed to be very small and disappears almost completely under the baby's head, as large pillows should not be used in the baby's bed for safety reasons.
You can clean the Medibino very easily:
The outer cover is machine washable at 40°. We recommend washing the cover in a laundry bag so that other laundry items cannot get caught in the fastener.
